First row of knitting
How to Knit Your First Row (Beginner-Friendly Guide)(H1)
Learning to knit starts with one simple step: creating your first row of knit stitches. This guide will take you through the process slowly and clearly so you can follow along even if you’re completely new to knitting.
Step 1: Hold Your Needles (H2)
-
Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand.
-
Hold the empty needle in your right hand.
This position prepares you to begin forming your first row.

Step 2: How to Make a Knit Stitch (H2)
Follow these small steps for each stitch:
-
Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from front to back.
The right needle should slide under the left needle, forming a small “X” shape. -
Wrap the working yarn (the yarn attached to the ball) around the tip of the right needle from back to front.
-
Pull the new loop through the stitch using the right needle.
You’ll see a new loop appear on the right needle. -
Slide the old stitch off the left needle.
That’s your completed knit stitch.
Step 3: Continue Across the Row (H2)
Repeat the same steps for each stitch.
-
When all stitches have moved to the right needle, switch hands so the full needle is back in your left hand.
-
This marks the end of your first knitted row—well done!
Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them(H2)
-
Mistake: A stitch slips off by accident.

Fix: Loosen your tension and avoid pulling the yarn too firmly.

Fix: Remove the needle and reinsert it into the full strand of yarn.
